Second Fall News Letter

The students in EF7A are off to a great start.  English classes have been filled with interesting discussions and great work from the students.  I am looking forward to what is to come in our next units.

English:

We will continue to use an integrated approach to teaching English.  This is an approach to English that has the students reading, writing and responding orally to texts.

Our next unit of study will be poetry.  The students will review poetic devices such as similes and metaphors while studying several different kinds of poems.  Specifically the students will be studying Ballads/Narratives and a newspaper poem.  Students will also examine the culture of Slam poetry. Students will be asked to read a variety of poems as well as to write poems of their own.  I recommend that the students write several of poems so that they will have a variety from which to choose.  The oral component will have the students choosing one of their own poems to present orally to the class.

Following the poetry unit the students will be examining media.  In term one the students will concentrate on reviewing and learning the techniques used by advertising companies.  More information on our media unit will come as we approach the starting date.

Daily Reading:

One of the best ways to improve English skills is to read often and to discuss what you are reading. Good readers are good writers. Reading a variety of books aloud helps improve fluency, spelling, and expands your understanding of the world around you.

Homework Policy:

Students should have some English homework every night.  This may be spelling/grammar practice, work to finish, assignments, skills to practice, or reading.

Home/School Connection
Communication between the home and school is an integral part of the education process.  There are several ways of doing this (i.e. telephone, email, note, student planner and meetings.)  My email address is Christine.Barrett@OCDSB.ca and the school telephone number is 613-731-4928.   I am happy to announce that there is an EF7A English Blog.  The Blog is located at barrettef7a.blogspot.com and should serve as an online agenda for the students.  Students and parents can see what is exactly for homework as well as find out what we are working on each week.
